I don’t know how I would have survived the last several months without your revelatory articles on Ukraine’s situation. I know you are reporting, it is the EU, Ukraine, Britain, Canada, etc. who have stepped up the heavy lifting. But your analyses are so thorough, I believe I have an ongoing sense of the developing situation. Knowing Ukraine and Russia and their respective histories and politics, I have a very strong preference for the brave little nation that has suffered so much. Thanks to you I have been able to be optimistic based on fact. You have remained clear-eyed and wise on so many things. Thank you.
I hope someone is writing a long article about the amazing guerrilla defense Ukraine has use succesfully to cripple against Russia’s High Tech Military. Europe can learn a lot of budget friendly Self Defense (and we know the US now has none).
This is one of the regrettable outcomes of the decision to pull back from supporting Ukraine.
Most of the ‘aid’ sent to Ukraine was American leftovers, and most of the money spent was within America’s own defence manufacturers and R&D.
Imagine being able to watch modern combat taking place at arm’s length without any risk to your own country and its resources- that kind of data collection is invaluable to those who appreciate how to use it.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the current administration really understood the benefits of having such a convenient means of observing the evolution of modern warfare, and the benefits of continuing to supply that aid and intel.
Good news! This ability to neuter Russia's control of the "high ground", coupled with the re-organization of Ukrainian gound forces and an increasingly effective manufacturing base for war-fighting materials is slowly turning the tide against Russia. Increased funding and introduction of higher end air defense assets from Europe will further erode Russia' ability to wage offensive operations. Reports of increased efforts by Russia to build facilities, access roads and rail lines along her eastern borders with the Baltics and Finland should be taken as a warning to Europe that Putin is still intent on threatening, if not attacking, eastern European countries at some point in the future. Europe does not have too many years to "gear up" its defense structure to counter this. Supplying Ukraine is the best bet to forestall Russia for the immediate future. Meanwhile, in the land of cuckoo's, Trump has gotten his "mineral rights" agreement with Ukraine, finally, although a number of the sites included in the agreement fall in the Russian occupied Donbas region! How that translates to continued US support for Ukraine is anyone's guess. With Trump, toss a coin.
An add: "Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov delivered a stark message at Russia's Victory Museum: the country is ready to mobilize on a scale reminiscent of the Soviet Union's World War II efforts "at any moment.""

Nice comment Alexandra …
Amazing writing, Mr. Narayan. Putin’s kamikaze war has led to a stronger Ukraine and united Europe.
europe is not exactly united yet, but it is getting there, mertz has a real job in his hands
I will take Chancellor Merz over Chancellor Scholz any day. He understands the stakes, for Ukraine and for Europe.

Who is left there? Young children or 80+ elderly. I try rather not think about ordinary Russians, just breaks my heart!
Yeah, somehow I rather doubt that. These Russian supporters are full boasts that have NO credibility.
Great piece of writing and so heartening to hear. Good news indeed.
Keep the good news coming!
