I share your disappointment in Israel's approach to Syria. They are missing an opportunity. I recall Netanyahu's "Blessing" and "Curse" maps at his UN speech last year. The new Syrian regime offers the chance to redraw those maps favorably and he is missing it.

What is the Trump administration’s position on Syria? I think we are also missing an opportunity perhaps.

Perhaps Israel’s Gaza crisis is higher priority?

The two are not unrelated. A friendly relationship with Syria can only help Israel in Gaza.

yes. It will improve the entire region. More stablity as it cuts out space for Iran.

I see in your analysis of Ukraine and the West potentially rebuilding Syria, the US won’t be playing a part. The US has exited the global stage—a vile, treacherous, weak version of its former self. I say that with grief, as an American who loves my country.

Fascinating. Convincingly argued. Poor Europe. It has a lot on its plate. How will Trump act to mess things up? Or will he simply back Israel?

Shankar! Great observations!

Thanks for outlining the options for Syria!

Yes, Europe could strengthen Syrian democracy!

Yet, Europe is still waking up from its long dependence on USA foreign policy dominance!

You are absolutely correct that it’s in Europe’s best self-interest to develop strong ties with Syria!

Before its collapse Syria was relatively prosperous with a growing middle class and educated population!

Climate change caused years of serious droughts! The minority Sunni farmers escaped into the cities! Civil wars raged, and a proxy war erupted!

Millions of Syrian refugees escaped to European, Christian nations!

After years of vicious bloodshed, the Alawite ( a minority sect within Islam) dictatorship fell! Now it’s the Sunni’s turn to get even! Yikes!

Help these poor people, please!

You mention that Israel could have seized the chance to help rebuild a shattered Syria. Israel is getting money every year from the USA; does it have the money ?

They have plenty of other avenues to help. Admin. Tech expertise. Water management. Farming. A whole lot. If not money, take the rest.
