The reported deal of Ukraine accepting the energy ceasefire in exchange for the U.S. maintaining and shielding energy plants sounds shockingly promising.

There is no need to trust Trump or Putin. The deal is finalized by the U.S. sending technicians to manage and shield the sites.

I was skeptical at first. But maybe this isn't bad. Ukraine gives up a valuable tactic - attacking Russian energy. But the payoff is solid.

I'll bet anyone $5 USD that the idea of the U.S. owning the power plants came from Zelensky. Trump may claim it if it works out. It is an idea from a clever man made to a stupid man. "Owning" power plants in a war torn country is a preposterous offering, but it sounds kinda alpha.

BTW, don't power plants only make profits because of large public subsidies?

If Putin is smart he will see if Trump might be interested in owning the Kerch Bridge.

I wouldn’t count on an unconditional ceasefire, I’m not even sure how this would work. Putin has never been one who could be trusted; nothings changed, unless he didn’t count on Europe to get its act together, and is panicking.

Putin may not fear Trump, but he may be starting to get worried about Europe; his best laid plans seem to be running amok! Just a thought!…:)

Holding judgement of the proceedings to see what steps trump takes from here.

Putin’s demands as they have been described are absolutely unacceptable. Not yet optimistic that trump, Rubio, Waltz can arrange a cease-fire, or a peace process that Ukraine should accept.

In any case, any negotiated peace is almost certainly going to overlook Russian responsibility for having illegally initiated this war of conquest under laughable false pretenses, committed thousands of documented war crimes and should be held accountable for $100s of billions in reparations. All this will almost certainly disappear as far as these negotiations go, never to be brought to account, but remembered for centuries.

I am relieved that Zelenskyy responded like a statesman who knows his audience for the good of his people. I hope this continues and the next time JD and others try to bait him he takes the high road. It’s awful that he has to act like the adult in the room, but that is the reality of the current situation.
