In the past few months, since Putin ordered his army to attack at any cost, Ukraine has managed to defend the area north of Pokrovosk reasonably well, but not so much to the south. The Russian strategy was good: stretch Ukraine's forces in the north and south while pushing in the middle. It worked in patches. The Russians advanced in Kursk and made gains in the south, but were stalled near Pokrovosk, Chasiv Yar, and Kupiansk.
