Well, well, well.

Trump's late-night social media rant about the growing Russia-China-India alliance didn't sound like a president in command. It sounded like a man who had no idea what to do next.

And mind you, that post—or the miscalculation that prompted it—was created by two people: President Trump and J.D. Vance. With an assist from the GOP.

Something clearly broke behind the scenes. I'm not buying the administration's line that tariffs were imposed simply because India buys Russian oil. Trump cited oil profits as the problem, then pivoted to trade imbalances, then jumped to India's role in BRICS and threats to the dollar.

So what exactly triggered this mess?

Most likely all of the above.

Every nation has grievances with others. There are diplomatic ways to handle them, and there are ways to create disasters. Trump and his team chose the latter, turning a fire hose of mistakes directly on India.

After Trump claimed he'd mediated peace between India and Pakistan, India's opposition pounced. They raised the issue in parliament, forcing External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to publicly contradict the president: "There was no call between PM Modi and President Trump from April 22 to June 17. At no stage was there any linkage between trade and what was going on."
