Trump must be feeling humiliated. He has likely walked straight into one of the worst, most chaotic diplomatic messes in modern history. How he plans to walk out of it—I have no idea. And he has no one to blame but himself. He should never have appointed Pete Hegseth and Elbridge Colby to the Pentagon, but he did—and paid the price in early July. He should never have sent Steve Witkoff as his point man to the Kremlin, but he did—and now the cost of those appointments has come due.
