Trump Signals He’s Ready to Hit Russia With Sanctions
When Trump returned to the Oval Office in January, he struck a skeptical tone—unsure whether Putin genuinely wanted peace in Ukraine. But after a series of calls with the Russian leader, his posture shifted dramatically, moving from cautious doubt to something far more accommodating. That pivot has unsettled Europe and blurred the West’s once-firm stance on Ukraine.
But on Sunday, that posture cracked.
In a sharp turn, Trump lashed out at Vladimir Putin, threatening to impose “secondary tariffs” on countries or companies buying Russian oil if the Kremlin fails to cooperate on a ceasefire.
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault,” Trump told NBC News, “I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil—on all oil coming out of Russia.”
